NUMBER OF SEATS

There is no specific limit of seats. However, certain number of Fellows will be nominated by The Grassroots Institute and their names will be displayed publicly. Remaining majority of the Fellows will be selected through a fair selection process.

APPLICATION PROCEDURE

Step 1

First of all, from the following types of Fellows, you need to choose one type of the Fellow who closely suits you. At a time, you can choose only ONE type of Fellow. Depending on your eligibility, expertise and interest, you are requested to choose one option from the following:

Description of Tasks
IAC Member The Grassroots Institute engages with very senior experts from across the world and keeps obtaining their advice as and when required. We correspond with each of the IAC Members at least once a year and maximum 3 times a year for seeking some kind of related advice. We do not overburden the senior persons for this. A letter of nomination for IAC is issued to each member for 3 years period. Current IAC members can be viewed on the link https://grassrootsinstitute.net/council.html
Mentorship Emeritus Fellows are expected and requested to impart their lifelong repository of knowledge and experience with the Young Fellow. As a Mentor, the Emeritus Fellow will guide, advise, support and evaluate the Young Fellows’ proposed works. Thus, matching the Broader Area chosen by Emeritus Fellow and the Young Fellow, one Emeritus Fellow will be assigned to mentor one Young Fellow. Minimum 1 and maximum 2 Mentorship Sessions (30-60 minutes) will be proposed in the Work Plan by the Emeritus Fellow as well as the Young Fellow, and the sessions will be facilitated by GLP using online platform. At the time of preparing Work Plan, the applicant is not expected to write name of the Emeritus Fellow as mentor or Young Fellow as mentee. Just propose anonymously.
Research or Action Research Falling within the chosen Broader Area, a research or action research topic will be selected. The choice of a topic has to be applicant’s own choice. Similarly, the location can be his/her own choice. Moreover, this research or action research to be conducted by the applicant can be a fresh proposal or part of ongoing research/study; but it should not have completed already. The duration of this research proposal should be minimum 1 year and maximum 2 years. If an applicant is proposing research or action research in his/her Work Plan under GLP, only the Abstract will be written in the Work Plan format. The detailed proposal (minimum 2000 words and maximum 5000 words) will be appended with the Work Plan document. Note that The Grassroots Institute cannot provide a funding for this research project; however, the Fellow can place a Fundraising Request on the Fellow’s Profile Page on our website. Class Lecture(s) The Grassroots Institute runs a program called ‘Global Lectures | Local Impacts’ [see https://grassrootsinstitute.ca/gli] in which professors and professionals provide lectures virtually to global audience at universities, colleges and organizations. The Fellow will provide minimum 1 and maximum 3 lectures on topic(s) within the frame of chosen Broader Area. This lecture will be recorded on video and be placed on YouTube, and same can be considered as e-Learning Lecture.
Advisory Board The Grassroots Institute publishes 4 journals at present and 2 (Indigenous World / Pastures & Pastoralism) are in planning stage. Depending on the matching field area and interest of Emeritus Fellow, the membership of Advisory Board of a journal will be offered for 3 years.
Editorial Board The Grassroots Institute publishes 4 journals at present and 2 (Indigenous World / Pastures & Pastoralism) are in planning stage. Depending on the matching field area and interest of Senior Fellow, the membership of Editorial Board of a journal will be offered for 3 years.
Editorial Assistance Young Global Fellows can propose to become Associate Editor of a journal published by The Grassroots Institute. As an Associate Editor, the YGF will assist the track-change editing and copyediting of at least 2 papers in a year. Proper training will be provided to the Fellow apart from the mentorship by the Emeritus Fellow.
Publication Out of the research or action-based work, a Fellow is expected to produce at least one research paper (minimum 6000), a white paper (minimum 6000 words) or a policy paper (minimum 3000 words). This publication will either be published by one of the Grassroots Journals or in the form of Occasional/Working/Policy Paper by The Grassroots Institute. We do not exercise any copyright on the documents written by any author. An author is the copyright holder; however, publishing is Open Access and free to be used by any person for non-commercial purposes.
Field Action Project While preparing the Work Plan, a Fellow proposing an Field Action Project will choose a Broader Area and propose a project. The choice of a topic of the project has to be applicant’s own choice. Similarly, the location can be his/her own choice. Moreover, this action/field project to be conducted by the applicant can be a fresh proposal or part of ongoing field work; but it should not have completed already. The duration of this project proposal should be minimum 1 year and maximum 2 years. In the Work Plan, only the Abstract will be written. Grassroots or Policy Advocacy Each Fellow is required to propose a set of activities focusing the grassroots advocacy or policy advocacy. These advocacy activities need to be linked to or embedded in the research project, action research project, or field action project. The advocacy component can be of a short duration or long duration integrated in the Work Plan. The Emeritus Fellow may propose advocacy component as standalone component in the Work Plan for short or long duration. The terms “grassroots advocacy” and “policy advocacy” and its techniques may be read on the internet sources.
e-Learning Lecture(s) Each of the Fellows will be expected to plan and record an e-lecture using appropriate video format. Minimum 1 and maximum 3 e-lectures can be proposed in the Work Plan with or without possible topic(s). If the Class Lecture is recorded on video during the delivery time, same can be considered as e-Learning Lecture. Further guidelines to undertake this activity will be provided by us.
Networking GLP is designed to provide extended opportunities for networking. All the Fellows will be able to connect, network and communicate within themselves and with other experts and scholars associated with The Grassroots Institute in one way or the other. For a Fellow, it needs to be proposed in the Work Plan as to what extent and how he/she would be networking for what sort of objectives. Time to time, a Fellow will be invited to participate the events of The Grassroots Institute where he/she can link with other people and exchange.
Blog/News Writing Every Fellow is required to write minimum 3 (one every year) blogs or news items. These will be posted on the GLP website and can also be posted/published anywhere either by The Grassroots Institute or by the Fellow herself/himself. How to write a blog or news for web portals can be understood from the internet sources. This news or blog will be published with the name of the Fellow.
Social Media Posting Having no limit of the frequency or content, a Fellow is expected to keep posting his/her updates on their own accounts on social media platforms. New accounts can also be created by the Fellows. Someone can create groups also on different platforms and request other Fellows to join. A vibrant community of Fellows can be created by someone. The Grassroots Institute will exercise no control or command over these initiatives. However, every Fellow will be expected to join Facebook group [https://www.facebook.com/grassrootsinstitute.net] and post in the group every month. Moreover, the Fellows may create their own Google Group for cross-communications and also join ‘ggN’ Google Groups. A Fellow needs to propose in Work Plan an innovative idea/task under this category.
Visibility Action Visibility action includes the showcasing or popularization of GLP and The Grassroots Institute. For example, when a Fellow writes about his/her affiliation, he/she may write ‘Senior Global Fellow’, The Grassroots Institute, Canada. This can be written anywhere. Such visibility can be employed in banners, profiles, CVs, social media profiles, research portals (e.g. researchgate), email signatures, and any type of communication.

Step 4

Once the theme, topic and activities are thought out or sketched roughly, an applicant is requested to prepare a detailed Work Plan. For facilitating this work, an APPLICATION FORM or TEMPLATE OF WORK PLAN can be downloaded and prepared in MS Word. This template is fully flexible document and does not bind the applicant to write less or more. But, it is always better to be rational when writing your Work Plan, which will be read by us. Writing in the Work Plan has to be clear, understandable, unambiguous, and error free.

DATELINE

Special Call 2022-25

The Special Fellows 2022-25 under Grassroots Global Leadership Program will join for 3 years from 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2025. All the Special Fellows will work as per their Work Plan at the location they have proposed to work. During the 3 years period, the Fellows will receive and exercise their leadership skills specifically tailored to become global leaders in specified fields.

The GLP will be accepting applications for the Special Batch 2022-2025 of the Fellows from 16 August 2022. Applications are due 15 October 2022. Virtual Introduction & Orientation will take place in July 2022. In May-June of 2025, all the Fellows will be invited to participate a Global Natural Resources event in Kyrgyzstan where they will present their work of 3 years period and future roadmap.

Special Fellows 2022-25 will be accepted for only the following two themes:

- Natural Resources Law & Governance
- Pastures and Pastoralism

Next Call 2024-27

The Fellows under Grassroots Global Leadership Program will join for 3 years from 1 July 2024 to 30 June 2027. All the Fellows will work as per their Work Plan at the location they have proposed to work. During the 3 years period, the Fellows will receive and exercise their leadership skills specifically tailored to become global leaders in specified fields.

The GLP will be accepting applications for the 2024-2026 batch of the Fellows from 1 January 2024. Applications will be due 1 May 2024. Introduction & Orientation will take place in July 2024.

SELECTION PROCESS

As and when the applications are received, preliminary comments may be given to the applicants in order to improve the Work Plan. Just after the deadline is over, all the applications received from potential Fellows will be forwarded to designated Jury Members. For each of 9 themes, there will be 2-3 Jury Members who will evaluate the applications. We will release the list of finally selected candidates and, accordingly, inform the Fellows.

REPORTING REQUIREMENTS

Once the Fellows are selected by The Grassroots Institute and they join the GLP. An Induction & Orientation event will take place virtually. The format and information about this event will be sent to all those who accept the offer of the Fellow.

During the tenure of 3 years, the following reports will be essential:

  1. First and Second Year’s Annual Progress Reports (in a format provided by email)
  2. Completion Report on completion of 3 years
  3. Mid-Term Feedback and End-Term Feedback (in a format provided by email)

CERTIFICATION

At the end of the Fellow's work plan and submission of the Final Report, a Certificate will be issued to the Fellows.
